Through a unique learning and decision-making process, we aim to determine design and implementation strategies for each project collectively with our participants to render feasible solutions. By actualizing the selected projects, we wish to make a real contribution, help the communities in need and push the boundaries of what design can do for social change.
Once we identify the project topic addressing social or environmental problems that require unique and efficient approaches, we aim to achieve reliable and viable outcomes by collectively determining design and application strategies for each project, through a shared decision-making process involving our partners, educators, participants, and students.
Benefiting from innovative approaches and experiences of the leading experts from different fields is a key part of what we seek. However, we also need unique methods and tools to address different kinds of problems. Therefore, to generate solution and application strategies collectively and address the issues through a multi-perspective approach, we intend to organize various events; competitions, conferences, research projects, public programs, and most importantly, student workshops to learn from the fresh ideas and perspectives of young people reflecting the zeitgeist of our time, and guide them to receive the training they need.
Besides drawing on a rich set of information sources and the expertise of leading professionals, we will also observe the short and long-term effects of our design products by staying in touch with the users and drawing up reports to assess the effectiveness of our work, and to develop references and design guidelines for our future projects. Also, we plan to contribute to the literature through the design guides, books, reports sharing our workshop and production process, as well as the data collected concurrently; raise awareness about social and environmental issues, guide and prompt designers to make contributions themselves.
We hope that these activities will also be the first steps towards establishing a multidisciplinary network that will interconnect future designers, architects, engineers, and artists in the pursuit of promoting positive social and environmental change, through research, dialogue, collaboration.
Utilizing design thinking, we address critical challenges in health, economy, education, environment, and social issues through each project. After framing the topic and providing the necessary research and background information, we start with the selection process of participants who will join our workshop led by one of the best practicing professionals. Student participation is free of charge, as we wish to connect with responsible, self-motivated, well-trained students. For us to be able to evaluate the applications efficiently, applicants are required to submit resumes, transcripts, and other documents demonstrating their design approach related to the chosen topic, such as short essays, sketches, proposals, or any other format they find appropriate.
During the workshops that will take place in our design studio, participants will work as teams to tackle the given challenge. Throughout this collaborative process, they will be involved in the decision-making process and the creation of alternative strategies to increase project efficiency and determine long-term effects.
In addition to the workshops, an exclusive lecture series will be held, during which a detailed briefing on the challenge topic, case studies, several reference projects will be presented and discussed by academicians and experts in their field.
At the final stage of each workshop, three designs will be chosen; the first one to be realized on the designated site, the second and third to be archived and later published on Design+Peace design guidelines with an honorable mention price to the designers.
They will witness the transformation from an idea to a tangible product, in collaboration with experts providing support on local regulations and technical details. With the guidance and contribution of the local master team, partners, volunteers as well as local governments and organizations, the building phase will then begin.
